Alvin Richard Welford, a native of Grand Bay, AL and lifelong resident of Mobile, AL, passed into eternity after a long and arduous illness. He was one of the twin sons of his late parents, Mary Elizabeth Cunningham Welford and John Cleve Welford. He was brought up in a loving and supportive community. As a Boy Scout he achieved Star rank and the God and Country Award. At Grand Bay United Methodist Church he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. After studying geology at the University of Alabama, he enlisted in the US Navy. He honorably served three tours of duty on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger during the Vietnam War as a flight crewman, then as an aviation electronics tech helping to ensure the safety of navy airplanes. Afterwards he worked as a medical electronics technician repairing heart monitors, incubators and other life-sustaining equipment at hospitals throughout the Southeast, including the University of South Alabama hospitals in Mobile, AL. His mechanical and electronic abilities enabled him to repair practically anything. He often helped family, friends and even stranded motorists repair their vehicles. He was very personable and possessed a phenomenal memory. He enjoyed sharing stories and experiences with precise detail.
