Barbara Beverly

July 25, 1939 — December 3, 2019

Barbara Ann Beverly passed away peacefully on December 3rd, 2019 at the age of 80 in her home in Mobile, Alabama. Barbara Blankenship was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 25th, 1939. She was the first-born daughter of Russell and Lee Blankenship. Barbara (“Babs”) grew up in Ashland, Kentucky where she met her life-long love Bennett Howard Beverly, Jr. Barbara and Bennett were married in the United Methodist Church on December 22nd, 1962, and enjoyed a happy marriage until Bennett’s passing in 1992. Barbara is survived by her sister Patty Nease and Patty’s children and grandchildren (Ashland, Kentucky), her brother Bradley Freeman and his wife Roxanne Strickland (San Antonio, Texas), and a step-brother Jimmy Freeman and his wife Cindy and their children (Michigan City, Indiana). Barbara will be forever loved by her three children and their spouses: Brenda Beverly and Bill Locker (Mobile, Alabama), Lynn Beverly Edelschein and Roy Edelschein (Denver, Colorado) and Brad and Loni Beverly (Cleveland, Ohio). Barbara was known as BB to her 7 grandchildren - Beverly Locker Goodson, Will Locker, Bennett Edelschein, Derek Edelschein, Bradley Beverly, Ross Beverly, Maggie Beverly – and her bonus grandchild, Gabe Goodson, and great grandson, Eli Goodson. Barbara lived a full life with too many devoted friends to mention, all treasured for their companionship and dedication to her. These relationships were formed over her 80 years and many homes in Ashland, Baltimore, Reading, Orangeburg, Sun City, and Mobile. Barbara loved gardening, games including bridge, cooking and baking, traveling, and listening to country and rock music. She frequented her local library and particularly enjoyed British murder mysteries. Although she marveled over a good plot twist, she wasn’t ashamed to skip ahead and read the ending. She liked to describe her countless hours training for competitive luge. Her sense of humor, courage and quick wit endeared her to those she met. She was known to laugh easily and often, and frequently at herself. Recurrent sources of humor were her poor handwriting and math skills and her fear of merging a car onto the highway. Anyone considering memorial donations in honor of Barbara’s life are encouraged to look at organizations that support cures for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or breast cancer or that fund public libraries or literacy initiatives. Another way to remember Barbara and to keep her close in your heart would be to listen and sing along to a Rod Stewart song. Memorial Service will be Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 10 AM at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Reception later the same day will be held at 3 PM at Elmcroft of Heritage Woods, 3440 Hillcrest Road, Mobile, AL 36695.
