GUNN
May 23, 1921-Feb. 2, 2016
Benjamin Franklin Gunn, 94 of Bay Minette, will have graveside services on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 2 pm in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Visitation will start at 1:30 pm at Mobile Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Gunn departed this life on Tuesday and was born in Frankville, Alabama to Franklin Tulley Gunn and Rettie Taylor Gunn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Georgene Wood Gunn in 1993. He is survived by his children, Donna Beard of Raleigh, North Carolina, Shirley Stovers (John) of Mt. Clare, West Virginia, Randy Gunn (Joni) of Satsuma, and Brad Gunn (Deborah) of Saraland; five grandchildren are Rachel Beard Hunt (Jon), Rita Beard Dorry (Kyle), Darrell Stovers, Gina Stovers, and Daniel Gunn.
Mr. Gunn became a Christian about the age of twelve, during an outdoor tent revival. This was a turning point in his life. He always said that after that night, he felt a weight released from his shoulders and a sense of peace about the future. After high school graduation, Mr., Gunn worked for Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company in Mobile before signing up for service with the U.S. Navy. His military assignment placed him aboard the troopship U.S.S. Saugus and he traveled throughout much of the South Pacific during the final two years of World War II. From his ship deck, he actually witnessed the residual smoke from the atomic bomb drop on Japan. After the war, he went to work for Alabama Power Company and held a variety of positions there for 38 years before retiring. Throughout his life, he was an avid gardener and immensely enjoyed hunting and fishing. Blessed with an inventive mind, Mr. Gunn spent a great deal of time creating ingenious work aid gadgets and tools. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff at William F. Green State Veterans Home for the excellent and faithful care given to "Pawpaw" Ben over the past six years. Memorials may be made to William F. Green State Veterans Home, 300 Faulkner Drive, Bay Minette, AL 36507-1461. Proverbs 20:7 It is a wonderful heritage to have an honest father.Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.
