Betty Smith Spence, a lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, went home to be with her Lord on December 23, 2017 at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Spence, and her parents, Raymond and Zettie Smith. She is survived by her son, Chuck Spence, brothers Raymond Smith, and Donald Ray Smith & wife, Marilyn, her sisters-in-law, Roxie Bunch, Janice Cochran (Frank), Jeanette Bauchman (Mike), Willene Spence, Lois Spence-Manderson, Barbara Spence, mother-in-law, Inez Spence, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Betty was a woman of faith and love. Her relationship with God was paramount to everything else in her life. Her walk with God never wavered from the time she accepted Christ as her Savior as a little child until the day she departed this earth to be with Him for eternity. She was a faithful and active member of Forest Hill Church of God where she held various leadership roles over the years.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and sister, Betty was an accomplished writer with a love for poetry. At age 39, she attended the University of South Alabama and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing.
She has won numerous awards for her photography, creative writing, poetry, and music composition. She is a former columnist and correspondent for the Press-Register and a devotional writer for Assembly of God and Church of God publications. She has had her works published in several print and on-line journals as well as several self-published books.
In 1988, she was the recipient of the Gayfer's Career Club, Outstanding Career Woman Award. In 1990, she received a resolution of commendation for outstanding professional achievement and community service by the State of Alabama House of Representatives. In 2011 at the Alabama State Poetry Association Conference at the University of Montevallo, she won first place in the Alabama State Poetry Society Fall Contest with the entry "These Are Mine;" second place in the Mississippi State Poetry Society-sponsored Poet Laureate category with "Needle Delights;" and honorable mention in the ASPS contest for "The Paper Folder."
She belongs or has belonged to several writers' organizations, including National League of American Pen Women, Inc., Alabama Writers' Conclave, the Pensters, Christian Writer's league, Alabama State Poetry Society, Florida Poetry Society, and the Huntsville Literary Society. She co-founded the Greenleaf Writers' Group. Her latest books, "Daystar" and "Traces" are considered by many to be her masterpieces.
