Avie Carole Hatchett Gaston, or “Gran” as she was affectionately known by her friends and loved ones, was born on June 16, 1930 in Mobile, AL. She passed away Monday, September 30, 2019. She was the first of five children of Alton Elbert Hatchett, Sr. and Vassie Dozier Hatchet. She was married to Galvin Gaston for 55 wonderful years. Galvin proceeded her in death on February 7, 2003. She was also proceeded in death by her sister, Yvonne Johnson. She is survived by her son, Dr. Alben (Vickie) Gaston; siblings, Nell Dorr, Claire Floyd, and Alton E. Hatchett “Sonny” Jr.; her four grandchildren, Kerrie Osborn (Matthew), Paul Gaston (Sara), John Gaston (Christy) , Micah Gaston (Briony), and her eight great-grandchildren, Morgan Werther (Charles), Jared Gaston, Devin Kato, Gabe Gaston, Karlyle Osborn, Carson Kato, Carter Osborn, and Levi Gaston; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.She lived in Grand Bay, AL most all her life. She was a woman of many talents. She was a seamstress, gardener, and an amazing cook and hostess. She touched many lives through her letter writing and prayers. She was known for her famous cookies and the way she loved to serve people and give thoughtful gifts. Galvin and she believed in investing in the next generation; they hosted contestants for the Junior Miss Pageant for years and she taught a Sunday school class for almost all of her adult life. She was known for her determination and fervency. Those who knew her well joked about how “hard-headed’ she could be and how difficult it was to prevail upon her to do anything other than what she had planned. She was also known for her generosity, and for constantly thinking of others. If she knew you, she was serving you. Gran will be missed, but she is now in Heaven with Jesus and Galvin. Funeral services, officiated by her son, Dr. Alben H. Gaston, will be held Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 12 Noon from Union Baptist Church in Grand Bay, AL. The family will receive friends at the church Thursday morning beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.
