Catherine Sindik Schiavoni died at her residence on July 12, 2015. Catherine was born in Mobile on August 11, 1921, the second of ten children of Emmett and Anita Sindik. She graduated from Bishop Toolen High School, and upon graduation as an R.N. from City Hospital of Mobile, she joined the Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant, stationed at Maxwell Field, Montgomery. It was at Maxwell Field that she met her husband, Vincent P. Schiavoni. Her husband became a career Air Force officer, and he and Catherine's military life together entailed many moves, from the Pacific Islands to Alaska. They retired in Catherine's home town of Mobile, where they shared many more years happy years together. Catherine was an excellent cook and an avid bridge player (Life Master status), but she was most proud of being "Grammy" to her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett G. Sindik and Anita Moll Sindik, her husband of 69 years, Vincent P. Schiavoni, her brothers Jack Sindik and Emmett I. Sindik, and her sisters Elizabeth Sindik, Ann Pond and Gloria McDonald. Catherine is survived by her son Michael (Paula) Schiavoni, daughters Carol (David) Reichart, Linda Wells, Janice Mendenhall and Elizabeth Schiavoni; grandchildren Katie (Doug) Stokely, Helen (David) Henry, Rachel (Matt) McLean, Will Sibley and Joe Sibley; great grandchildren Lauren, Ella, Julia, Elizabeth, Anne Portman and Barrett; brothers, the Rev. George Sindik and the Rev. Matt Sindik; sisters, Mary Grace Galle and Angele Baker; and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dominic Catholic Church at 12 Noon on Friday, July 17, 2015. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 12 Noon on Friday at the Church. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Dominic Catholic Church, Little Sisters of the Poor, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
