Charles Howell Cox, age 93, passed away peacefully at home on May 6, 2015 in Theodore, AL, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on April 12, 1922 to William H. and Eva Cox in Bascom, FL. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit and kind heart, and will be greatly missed by all.
Mr. Cox was a WWII Army veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater from 1942-1946. He saw action in the Solomon Islands and the Philippines. Afterwards he worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers until retiring in 1981, having travelled to many locations such as Panama and Alaska. He was also a member of Theodore First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peggy Cox of Theodore, AL, his daughter Cathy Driskell of Mobile, AL, his son Charles Cox (Karen) of Mobile, AL, his grandchildren Jessica (Steven) Drews, Kendra Whitten, and Hayli Driskell, all of Mobile, AL, 5 great-grandchildren, Daylon Drews, Maycie Drews, Mary Kaylen Whitten, Anna Claire Whitten, and Makenna Lynn Waltman. Pallbearers will be James Hart, Darriell Hart, Rocky Cox, Gene Lami, Pruitt Woodall, and Paul Woodall. Honorary Pallbearers are Eddie Burl Hart, Joey Mooneyham, Bruce Rauhe, Jr.and Danny Fritz. and a host of other family and friends. Surviving siblings are Mattie Lou Brogdon of Bascom, FL, Myrtice Kazee of Houston, TX, and Wilma Rauhe of Bascom, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lela Hart and Berta Ledford, and brother Larry Cox.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Monday 12 noon until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to USA Women's and Children's Hospital.
