Charles Mackwell Unkrich II
(April 1, 1959 - September 25, 2020)
It is with great sadness that the family of Charles Mackwell Unkrich II, announce his
passing after a lengthy battle with cancer on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the age of 61.
Charles was born in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1959 to Charles and Maggie. He graduated from
Rutherford High School in Panama City, Florida where he met the love of his life and best
friend, Sonya. They would marry in 1978. Charles completed an Associate Degree from
Chipola Junior College and joined the United States Coast Guard in 1979. Charles and
Sonya gave birth to their first daughter, Christa, in Port Huron, Michigan in 1980; their
second daughter, Candice, in Houston, Texas in 1989; and their son, Charles (Chaz) in
Mobile, Al in 1998. In 2007, Charles completed an Associate Degree from Thomas Edison
State College in Applied Sciences with a career track of Seamanship & Navigation.
Charles retired from 30 years of service in the United States Coast Guard as an E-9,
Master Chief Boatswain's Mate. He served as a leader for the USCGC Clamp, USCGC
White Pine, USCGC Axe, USCGC Chena, and the USCGC Wedge where they established
many lifelong friendships. After his retirement, he decided that he had more to offer as a
Navy Personnel instructor for Austal ship building in Mobile, AL until 2018. Charles had
many passions including teaching, fishing, camping, any and all new technology, and
most of all being a loving husband and father.
Charles will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 42 years, Sonya Marie Unkrich;
children, Christa Nichole Allen, Candice Marie Boykin, Charles Mackwell Unkrich III;
grandchildren, Melanie Anne Nowell, Landon Mathew Rogers, Kyson Trent Allen, Jax
Bryant Allen, Tytan Gabriel Adkinson, Maverick Paydon Adkinson; brother Allen Neal
Unkrich; sister Phyllis Kilpatrick Kalifeh and numerous other family members and
friends.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles Mackwell Unkrich and Maggie Katherin
McLemore; sister Melba Ann Hines.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., at Mobile
Memorial Gardens Funeral Home 6040 Three Notch Rd., Mobile, Alabama 36619.
Following the Memorial Service at 1:30 p.m., Charles will be honorably laid to rest at
Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, 34904 Alabama Hwy 225,
Spanish Fort, Alabama 36527.
