Charles Afton Whatley, a native of Deland, FL and longtime resident of Theodore, AL, died Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the age of 77. Charlie was a real estate investor; a US Army Veteran; a member of Calvary Assembly of God; was an accomplished musician and played the saxophone with The Worship Team band at his church; went on numerous mission trips in several countries; enjoyed fishing; hunting; traveling; frying fish for family outings and building and flying model motored airplanes. He won several awards across the state flying his planes and also in skeet shooting competitions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben Afton Whatley and Larnie Answorth Whatley; two sisters, Louise Whatley Thornton and Patsy Whatley; and his fur baby canine, Slick Willie. His survivors include his wife, Joy B. Whatley; children, Donald E. (Joyce) Champion, Tony W. (Debbie) Champion, Angela C. (Marshall) White and David M. (Brandy) Brown; one sister, Doris Whatley Blumenthal; nine grandchildren, April Rogers, Chris (Rebecca "Becky") Champion, Casey (Anna) Champion, Derek Connolly, Matthew Connolly, Keenan Connolly, Caitlin Connolly, Devin Brown and Brandon Brown; five great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends and his canine companions, Libby and Peanuts. Funeral services, officiated by Reverend Guy Mims, will be held Friday, May 18, 2018 at 12:00 Noon from Calvary Assembly of God Church. The family will receive friends at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Thursday evening, May 17, 2018 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and at the church Friday morning from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow Friday at 2:30 PM in Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 34904 State Hwy. 225, Spanish Fort, AL 36527. Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.
