After attending the Alabama State College Mobile branch for one year, he transferred to Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received a B.A. in French. He went on to receive a national teaching fellowship to North Carolina A&T University and an M.S. in French in 1968. He earned his Ph.D. in higher education administration from Florida State University in 1981 and went on to serve Bishop State as academic dean and assistant to the president until his retirement in 2006. During his career, he had the honor to serve on numerous local and national boards, including the United States Sports Academy and Franklin Primary Health Center.
In retirement, Charles enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his grandsons Cullen (C.J.), Jared (Jay), and Joshua. As his illness progressed, he and his wife of 51 years, Yolanda, went to live with their daughter, Maya, and her husband, Cullen, where he was provided loving care by the three of them, along with their son, Jared. Charles also leaves behind loving siblings and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
