Grace Christine (Brown) Daugherty Obituary
Grace Christine (Brown) Daugherty, 91, of Macungie, PA, formerly of Mobile, AL, died November 25, 2023, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, PA.
She was born April 5, 1932, to John Coley Brown and Bessie Alliene (Etheredge) Brown in Grove Hill, AL. She graduated from Jackson HS in Jackson, AL, and worked various manufacturing jobs in addition to being a tremendous homemaker.
Christine met her future husband at a high school football game, which was ironic since she was not a sports fan and had already graduated high school when they met. She and (Lyman) Finley Daugherty were happily married for 66 years until his passing in 2017.
They followed his job to Mobile and Montgomery, AL, Amory, MS, and Springfield, MO, where they raised their family. They retired to Jackson and later, Mobile, where she was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church. After Finley’s death, she moved to Pennsylvania to be closer to her daughter and family.
Christine was innately kind, smart, practical and loved sharingher wicked sense of humor. She enjoyed working in her garden, watching Hallmark movies and her daily Bible study on TV.
She was always up for a game. Whether you were her child, grandchild or friend, you quickly realized Christine played full-contact Dominoes, Rook and Skipbo. In other words, she was there to win. “It’s just a little card game” was her signature opening line used to encourage people to make bold bids whileplaying Rook.
She was very proud of her family and loved hearing about her grandchildren’s accomplishments. She loved her role as “Granny” more than anything else.
She will be greatly missed by son Lyman S. Daugherty (Kim Anglin) of Branson, MO, daughter Nancy C. Dougherty (Ed) of Allentown, PA, grandchildren Ashley Schimonitz (David), Christopher Dougherty (Kristen), Stacey Daugherty, Emily Dougherty, Sarah Dougherty, Don Daugherty Jr., and seven great grandchildren.
She is also survived by siblings Eloise Stokes, Georgia McKay, Alice Oliver, Jerry Elijah Brown and scores of nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, husband, son Donald Finley Daugherty Sr. and siblings Elmore, Tollie, Roy, Bobby and Henry Brown, Pauline Claro, Dot Downey, Lucille Boyd, and Marie Zentz.
