David Leroy Moates passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021, at the age of 78, in Mobile, Alabama. Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
David served our country honorably in the United States Army. During his active duty, he served in Germany and Japan and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He also served his local community as a police officer with the Mobile Police Department for several years. David was passionate about his roots and loved researching the genealogy of the Moates and Dykes families. He also enjoyed his electronics and tending to his garden.
David leaves behind a sister, Betty (Danny) Thomas; sister-in-law, Mozelle Moates; nephews and nieces, Michael Thomas, Kenneth (Alicia) Thomas, Steven Moates, Cathy Moates, Travis Dannelley, Jr., and Julia Dannelley; great-nephews and great-nieces, Kaitlyn, Christopher, and Stephanie Thomas, Skylar and Mi'Lynn Thomas, Zack and Zoe Blair, and Daniel Dannelley; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow Moates; mother, Julia Moates; sister, Frances Dannelley; and brother, Herman Moates.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 24, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, followed by graveside services at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made in memory of David Moates to Hill Spring Baptist Church, 335 Eliza Jordan Rd N, Mobile, AL 36608.
