FAIR
February 2, 2015
Deloma Glass Fair, a native of Gordo, Alabama who resided in Mobile since 1939, passed away on Monday. Her happy childhood was spent roaming with friends on lands settled by her ancestors in the 1830's; and their tradition of attending the University of Alabama goes back nearly 160 years. Her grandfather Glass, a member of the Democrat National Committee, is credited with the Bankhead family's rise to power in Washington, D.C. Her ancestors all came to America before the Revolutionary War, and include historical figures who founded and were the first settlers of Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Long Island, N.Y. Cape Ann, Mass, is named for her grandmother, Ann Winthrop; and her grandfather, William Robertson, was a founder of Williamsburg, VA. Her English Heritage included descent from all signers of the Magna Charta and all of the Earls of Warwick including the first members of the current Greville Family, as well as multiple descent from all of the English Kings through Edward III's sons. She was a long time employee of Ryan-Walsh Stevedoring; and although she remained a Baptist, taught the Ladies Class at Michigan Avenue Methodist Church, where she was on the Board of Stewards. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewitt Talmadge Glass and Eddie Mae Keating Glass; by her brother James Dewitt Glass; and by her husband of 57 years, Charles Treeman Fair. She is survived by her daughter Charla Elaine Fair, nephew James D. Glass, and other nieces and nephews. A private family service was held at Mobile Memorial Gardens on February 6, 2015.
