Dorothy Sawyer

March 23, 1927 — January 15, 2018

Dorothy May "Dot/Dottie" Hinton Sawyer, 90, a long-time resident of Mobile, AL, passed away peacefully at Providence Hospital on Monday, January 15, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Aubrey Bernie Sawyer, Sr., and is survived by two children Kathleen Anne "Kathy" White (Tom) and Aubrey Bernie Sawyer, Jr. (Cindy, deceased), four grandchildren Aubrey Bernie Sawyer III, Lisa Elizabeth "Beth" Early Lowery, Elisa Dawn Sawyer, and Thomas Pierce "T.J." White III (Brittney), and great grandchildren Alexis Catherine "Lexi" Lowery, Aubrey Bernie Sawyer IV, and Lily Olivia Welch. She is also survived by several siblings (listed below), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was born in Chickasaw, AL, on March 23, 1927, to William Ransom "Hap" Hinton and Eleanor Jeanette Cosminsky, who both preceded her in death. She was the second of their nine children: Elizabeth Jeanette "Betty" Joiner (Howard), Margaret Eugenie "Janie" Sawyer (Earl), William Ransom "Bill" Hinton III deceased, Robert Dowling "Bob" Hinton (Irma) deceased, Phillip Ray "Bud" Hinton (Charlene) deceased, George Carr Hinton (Betty), Eugene Hayes "Gene" Hinton (Mary Kathryn), and Mary Eleanor Freeman (Denson). She is also survived by a beloved cousin, Mary Anne Rollison Herron (Richard), who was like a sister to her. Mary Anne called her daily for many decades, just to chat and to keep up with her. She was an active, independent, and mischievous child, relaying a story of how she rode the family's bull when she was around twelve years of age. She mentioned to all of her visitors that her father always said that "her tongue was tied in the middle and wagged at both ends," and that "The Lord didn't want me and the devil wouldn't have me," adding, "I must have been a very precocious child!" Another favorite story was how she removed the stitches in her foot by herself when she was six years old so she wouldn't have to see that "mean old doctor again." That's when she knew that she needed to become a nurse. Her pallbearers are her two grandsons, Aubrey Bernie Sawyer III and Thomas Pierce "T.J." White III; and nephews from each of her eight siblings: Denson Fred Freeman, Jr.; David George Hinton; Eugene Hayes "Gene" Hinton, Jr.; and Morris Hinton Joiner. Honorary pallbearers are nephews Michael Duane "Mike" Hinton; Robert Dowling "Robbie" Hinton, Jr.; William Ransom Hinton IV; and Leslie Toliver Sawyer. Dorothy attended Murphy High School in Mobile, but graduated from Deerpark High School in Cincinnatti, OH, in 1945. She entered nursing school later in life, fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. She graduated from Mastin School of Nursing in June 1967 at the first commencement. She worked at the Mobile Infirmary following graduation, working as an emergency room and surgical nurse. Dorothy was also an avid genealogist and volunteered at many genealogy organizations in the area. She was a woman full of compassion and love, always helping those in need.
