Douglas Frazier

On July 22, 2020, Doug Frazier, beloved husband and loving father, unexpectedly passed away a week after his sixty-seventh birthday. He was born in Massena, New York, but lived most of his life in the South. He was predeceased by his parents, Adrian Samuel Frazier and Jean Ethel Tallion, and his sister, JoAnn Kennedy. He is survived by his sister, Adrianne Bear, sons Anthony (Allysia), Alex, and his daughter Katherine Maureen. He is also survived by two grandsons, Maximus and Axel Frazier, and his devoted wife, D. A. Bass-Frazier.

Doug had a passion for sports and excelled in them all. In December 1966, he was selected for the Pop Warner football Joe Beaulieu Memorial Sportsmanship Award. He began his wrestling career in Junior High School and continued through his 1975 graduation from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He earned varsity letters in wrestling throughout high school, a varsity letter in cross country, and JV and varsity letters in football. While a senior at Massena Central High School, he took a college preparatory class, was the Student Class President, competed in a national history program and was selected to participate in the 1971 Presidential Classroom Workshop in Washington, D.C.

After an undefeated senior year in wrestling at Massena Central High School, Doug was the first plebe (freshman) in the history of West Point to earn a place on the varsity wrestling team. He continued as an outstanding member of the wrestling team through his 1975 graduation. Doug also loved playing lacrosse, racquetball, handball, and golf. He also aggressively played board games and enjoyed creating elaborate pranks.

Doug was very active in Dayspring Baptist Church and served as an usher for many years. However, he was best known for his cooking skills. He cooked meals for Christmas celebrations, the widow and widower’s group, and was best known for cooking weekly meals that fed two hundred or more of Mobile’s homeless. It is estimated that over twenty years he cooked more than 250,000 meals to serve those in need.

In 2011, Doug won the Sun America Financial Group Community Spirit Award for his outstanding volunteer service with the Dayspring Homeless Ministries. This award included a $10,000 grant which was used for the church’s ministries. He also began a soup ministry and, for several years, he prepared fifty gallons of soup each month for distribution to local apartments for the elderly.

Doug was President of the local West Point Society for many years. He had been the regional contact and recruited high school students in Mobile and Baldwin county for potential West Point Cadets. Over the years he has been fortunate to see many of his candidates graduate from USMA.

For more than twenty-five years, he was well known at Greek Fest for his skill with the flaming grills cooking gyros and souvlaki. This past year, he expanded his repertoire and organized Church members in preparing Pastitsio. Doug was very active in numerous charitable and philanthropic endeavors through his membership in Chapter 310 of the Nick Stratas Chapter of the Order of AHEPA, a Hellenic fraternal organization. He had just served two years as Chapter President and would have been beginning his third one-year term as President. He was Chapter Secretary 2016 and 2017 and was named Secretary of the Year in 2017. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary of several affiliated corporations collectively known as AHEPA 310 Housing Corporations, which are not-for-profit corporations that operate 653 independent apartment-style housing units for seniors at twelve different apartment sites throughout Mobile and Baldwin Counties. He has served as Secretary for these corporations from 2015 to present. His heart and soul was invested in making affordable, comfortable senior housing available in his community.

Doug often said that while he did not have the gift of teaching the Gospel, but he shared his love for others by nourishing their souls with good food.

Doug was best described by his beloved daughter, Kate: “The most infectiously friendly person and best cook ever. A selfless and kind person who made such a difference in the community. The most loved friend, father and husband. Breathing hurts. Existence hurts. If anyone asks me if I’m okay... the answer will be no for a very long time.”

There will be a visitation on Saturday, August 1, 2020, at Mobile Memorial Gardens, 6040 Three Notch Rd., in Mobile from nine to eleven o’clock. The family requests that facial coverings and social distance be maintained. A celebration of life service will be scheduled when it is safe to comfort each other with hugs. Having joined the Long Gray Line, Doug will be given a military funeral service with full honors when he is interred at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
