Edward Herbert Carroll, Sr., age 77, a native of Prichard, AL and a resident of Orange Beach, AL since 1993, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015. He was born to Esther Aline Robert Carroll and William Herbert Carroll on December 2, 1937. Edward graduated from McGill Institute in 1957. He was a US Navy veteran and served on the USS Forrestal CVA-59 for two years. He worked for International Paper Company for 38 years as a maintenance worker, President of the Union, Safety Supervisor and Supervisor of Contract Services. As Safety Supervisor, he made 1,000,000 hours without a loss time accident 16 times and set a corporate record of 4,000,000 hours. After he retired from IP in 1995, he captained a crew boat for B&G Barge Rental Company, Inc. for two years. In 2004 he was elected to the Orange Beach City Council and served for eight years in Place 1. He served as President of the Orange Beach Community Center and, in February, 2003, the Community Center undertook the building of a Kids' Park in Orange Beach. Ed spearheaded the project and today the park is named for him. He was a poll worker in Orange Beach for many years. Edward married Merle Hobby Carroll on July 27, 1957 and they were married for 58 years. He loved to fish and he loved his grandsons, doing everything he could for them. He took them on trips, fishing, swimming, to school and kept them when they were sick. To them he was known as "Pops". He was a member of St. Thomas by the Sea Catholic Church in Orange Beach. There he served two terms on the parish council. Ed was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as Past Grand Knight of Council 13339 at St. Thomas by the Sea. He was a past member of the Civitan Club of Prichard. While living in Mobile, he was a member of the American Association of Safety Engineers, where he served a term a President; Leadership Mobile; the American Red Cross; Cornerstone; and Friendly Credit Union. For many years, he was a member of Skyline Country Club (now Heron Lakes) and a Mystic Society. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Herbert Carroll, and his brother, Elbert Leonard Carroll. Survivors include his wife, Merle Hobby Carroll; daughter, Cynthia Lynn Carroll; son, Edward Herbert Carroll, Jr.; three grandsons, Edward Herbert Carroll, III, Joshua Hunter Carroll and Earl Fisher Carroll; and his sister, Dolores (James, Jr.) Mills of Madisonville, LA. The family wishes to thank his hospice nurse, Becky; aids, Susie and Terry and sitter, Marilyn, all of whom took loving care of him. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, August 3, 2015 at 11:00 AM from St. Thomas by the Sea Catholic Church. The family will receive friends Monday morning at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Orange Beach Community Cemetery.
