Edwin Green

August 30, 1930 — July 22, 2023

Edwin Harris Green Jr., 92, of Mobile, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at his home.

Edwin was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Nashville, Tennessee to Edwin Harris Sr. and Catherine Green. While attending high school in Birmingham, he earned the rank of first lieutenant in the ROTC program.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division on the day the Korean War began. During his three years of service, he attained the rank of staff sergeant and jumpmaster.

Later, while attending Howard College in Birmingham, Edwin received an Air Force commission and earned his Air Force wings. He then transferred to the U.S. Army Aviation as a pilot, where he earned the rank of captain. He was discharged in 1964.

Edwin had a long career in the piping and fitting industry. He started as a salesman and was eventually promoted to general manager of several offices.

In 1954, Edwin married Patricia Stewart. Their journey together lasted 57 years, ending in her death in 2011.

Edwin was a terrific dad, grandpa, uncle, friend and neighbor who was proud of his family and loved spending time with them. He was also always in control and “The Boss”.  When he wasn’t telling people what to do, he loved sharing stories of his rich and colorful history.  He also was known for his sharp mind and perfecting the homemade waffle.

Most notably he was known for his love of country as a brave American hero eager and honored to serve, for the love of his wonderful wife Pat, his precious dog Molly and living by his own rules until the end.

Edwin is survived by his children, Cindy Schartel (Ken), Mindy Currie (Chris), Ed Green (Dale), and Patty Miller (Rob); grandchildren, April Schweigert (Zach), Clay Currie (Megan), Kenny Schartel (Sara), Kyle Green (Whitney), Madeline Eaton (Rob), and Reed Strength (Stephanie); great-grandchildren, Lukas Currie, Chloe Currie, Neil Currie, Owen Currie, Cash Schweigert, Stone Schweigert, and Emery Schweigert, Isabella Eaton, Evan Green, Anders Green, Grace Green, his beloved dog Molly, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Green; grandchildren, Todd Currie and Kevin Schartel; siblings, Reba Green, Nancy Varble, Beverly Gunn, and George Green.
