Elijah Autry, Jr.

Elijah Quitman (Gene) Autry Jr. passed into eternity to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 22, 2016.E.Q. was born on August 1, 1929 in Selma, Alabama to Tilda Cason and Elijah Quitman Autry Sr. Through his father's work transfers by Postal Telegraph and then Western Union, E.Q.'s early years after Forest. MS. were spent first in Shreveport, LA and then Mobile, AL. He graduated Murphy High School in 1947 and attended Springhill College. He was then awarded a contract to play Class D baseball for the Cleveland Indians' farm club in Cordele, GA. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1948 to 1949 and then for 6 more years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He returned to Mobile to marry his sweetheart, Mabel Davis in 1952. They had 2 children, Pam in 1956 and David in 1960.
E.Q. was an employee of Hollingsworth and Whitney, which became Scott Paper Company. He retired on January 1, 1989 after 39 years of service. After retirement, he then proceeded to play with his new "hobby" of woodworking, producing more than 1,000 hand-built porch swings with A-frames plus rockers, picnic tables and assorted models of chairs. He was still building right up to a week before his death. E.Q. was a devoted Christian. He and his equally devoted wife, Mabel taught Training Union and Sunday School at First Baptist Prichard, Bayou Sara Baptist Church and then First Baptist Mobile, now Redemption Church where they have been members for 21 years. He was a deacon and taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. E.Q. is survived by his sweetheart, friend and loving wife, Mabel; his caring daughter, Pam (Chuck) Lackey; his faithful son, David Autry; his doting sister, Elizabeth Autry (Jimmy - dec) Jernigan; his adoring granddaughter, Annie (Noah) Garner; hid delightful great-grandchildren Logan Garner, Madison Garner and newly born Chloe Garner; sister-in-law, Sybil (Mark) Lasker; sister-in-law, Jewel Lorenzen; brother-in-law, Jim Davis; nephew, Jay Jernigan, his wife, Natalie and their son, Caleb Jernigan; first cousins, Margaret Jane Autry Seymour, Nathalee Autry Brooks, Patricia Autry Harvey and Marilyn Seale Wilson. We will miss him greatly, but we will see him again because of the promises from our Lord Jesus Christ. "…be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain." (1 Cor. 15:58). Don't Quit! The funeral service will be held at the Mobile Memorial Gardens Chapel at 10:00 a.m., Saturday morning, June 25, 2016, Pastor Ed Litton officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, June 24, 2016 at the Mobile Memorial Gardens Chapel. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
