Eugene Glenn Hess, Jr., 67, more commonly known as Pepper Hess, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Springhill Memorial Hospital in Mobile, Alabama.
Pepper leaves his son, Joshua Hess and spouse, Rachel Hess; his son, Jeremy Hess and spouse, Allison Hess; two grandchildren, Fischer Hess and Pepper Lee Hess; his sister, Pam Woodall and spouse, Bennett Woodall; his sister, Debbie Rather and niece Jessica Rather; his aunt, Jackie Patton; his cousin, Mike Patton and spouse, Gail Patton; his cousin, David Patton; and his beloved Bassett Hound, Dixie.
Pepper is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Hess; his daughter, Lee Johnson; his mother, Marion Hess; and his father, Eugene Hess, Sr.
Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, the son of Eugene Hess, Sr., and Marion Hess, he was a lifelong resident of Mobile.
In 1969, Pepper joined the United States Army, stationed in South Korea, serving for 3 years before being honorably discharged. He, then, took on his father's meat market, Whistler Meat Market, and ran the business for about 10 years. He moved on to Dairy Fresh as a route man and stayed with this company for about 15 years, until retirement age. He was known not to miss a day of work. He taught both of his boys the value of hard work and good work ethic.
Throughout Pepper's life, boating and fishing was a passion. It began with his father. Then, as a teenager, he would spend the summer months in Orange Beach with his Uncle Pat and Aunt Jackie on the water. Later in life, he had several boats of his own. These included a pontoon boat, a Chris Craft, a Pursuit, and a Sea Ray. The water was definitely a lifelong love of his that never wavered.
In the most recent years, what made Pepper most happy was being a grandfather. He was the daily caregiver to his grandson, Fischer. Known as "BoBo", Pepper was wrapped around Fischer's finger from the start. They were best buddies and made so many memories together. Pepper was also happy to have a little granddaughter, Pepper Lee. It is a blessing that they were able to meet. He took his job as a grandfather very seriously and was the best "BoBo" anyone could ask for.
The love of Pepper's life, Judy, was taken from him too soon. His heart had been broken since her death in 1996. It gives the family great comfort to know that Pepper and Judy are again joined together in heaven.
Visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm, followed by Funeral Services in the chapel.
