Frieda A. K. Leonard passed away on Sept. 9th, 2017 at the age of 91. She was born in Germany to Johan and Babatte Herold. As a teenage girl in WWII Germany she survived both the scourge of the Nazis and the Allied firebombing of Nuremberg. After the war, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1953 to be with her husband, Sam Leonard, a young American GI she had met and fallen in love with. For most of her life she lived in Oakton, VA with Sam until he preceded her in 1988. She survived open-heart surgery in 1999. After that, for 10 years she split her time between VA and CA with her constant companion and 2nd love, David Gutierrez. After David's passing, she returned to and remained in the Oakton house that she and Sam had built with their own hands, brick by brick, until failing health no longer made that possible. She moved to Mobile, AL in 2013 to be with her son and daughter-in-law. She loved to garden, cook, bake or just go on rides in the country. The spring explosion of color from the dozens of Azaleas in her yard was the wonder of the neighborhood. Her favorite season was Christmas. During that time, her house was filled with the aroma of cookies, cakes and pies in the oven. Her family, neighbors and friends all eagerly knew they would receive their part of those efforts. She also loved to tell the stories of her time and experiences in Germany during WWII. She was generous and always had a place in her heart for "the little guy". She was loved by all who knew her. She was cherished by her family. In addition to Sam, she was also preceded by her sister, Lisa Gutierrez, her brother-in-law, David T. Gutierrez and her nephew, David A. Gutierrez Jr. She is survived by her son, Raymond Herold; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Herold; granddaughter, Aurora Herold; step-grandson, Adam Watters; brother, Hans Herold; sister-in-law, Marga Herold; sister, Heidi Schneider, and brother-in- law, Werner Schneider; nieces, Erlinda and Betty Gutierrez, Petra Schneider; nephews Norbert and Ken Herold; other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Royston Funeral Home in Middleburg, VA from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM. Graveside services and interment will follow at 12:00 Noon in Middleburg Memorial.
