Geary Polk

Geary W. Polk passed away January 30, 2018 at the age of 76. Geary was a longtime member of the Local 653 Operating Engineers and at one time served as President before retiring. He also served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard as a Staff Sergeant with the 129th Med. Co. and after over 25 years of service with his friends Tom Ryan and Randall Wright, he retired from the Reserve in 1990. He was a devoted member and beloved friend of many at University Church of Christ. He served his Church as a master of all repairs. He was a real Mr. Fix-it and kept everything running smoothly. Whenever he was called him to help around the church he would go right over and get to work right away because he wanted to be of service, so he really never retired. For many years he was a member of the Antique Car Club in Mobile and at one time owned and restore a 1931 Cadillac that was his pride and joy. His other pride and joy was his nephew, or more like a son, Darren Polk. Geary was a father to him from the time he was 5 years old until now which is over 45 years. He took such good care of Darren, he was instrumental in his miraculous recovery from epilepsy. Uncle Geary's faith in God and his strong love for his family made him a beloved son, brother and nephew to his siblings and their families. His specialty was enriching the lives of others. If anyone needed anything, Geary made himself available to be there for them. He would drive from Alabama to California to help his sister Charlene or drive across country to deliver a car to his sister Betty. He would check-in on his sister Jane after her husband died and help her in any way he could. He made sure both his brother Charles and his sister Charlene had lovely funeral services. That was just the kind of generous, loving person he was to his family. He extended that generosity to his church family and neighbors. If he knew of a shut-in or anyone who needed help or a ride to church, he was there for them. That was his character. Geary Polk was a helper who served other above himself. It may come as a surprise but he had many varied life experiences. In his early years he drove a taxi cab in downtown Mobile. He learned to restore houses working with his Dad and brothers renovating, building or roofing houses. He raced cards with his brothers Edgar and Charles on a dirt track. At one time, he traveled to Saudi Arabia to be a Director of Transportation, Vehicle Sales and Repair bravely overcoming cultural and language barriers. Geary was also a local businessman contributing to the local economy through renovating, many rental properties throughout the years. It seems there was nothing he could not accomplish. He had a flair for succeeding in his life, being generous to others, and working for the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents Faye Lowe Polk and Edgar Warren Polk, his brother Charles Dwain Polk and his sisters, Charlene Polk and Jane Polk Cooner. He is survived by his Aunt Lillian Lowe, brother Edgar Warren Polk Jr., Linda Polk Goodson (Danny), Karen Polk Mayhugh (Rusty), Bettye Ann Polk McGrath (Ken), Darren Polk, Debra Polk Moore (Patrick), Steven Dwain Cooner (Judy), William David Cooner, Robert Warren Cooner (Lisa), Timothy W. Cooner (Evonne), Edith Kathleen Cooner and many other nieces, nephews and relatives. A family and friends viewing will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens, Monday February 5, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. with a Chapel Service from 10:00 a.m. followed by a committal service at the grave site. All are welcome to attend a Luncheon Reception in honor of Geary Polk from 12 Noon until 2 p.m. at University Church of Christ, 5651 Zeigler Blvd., Mobile, Al 36608
