George Sikes

February 10, 1936 — January 30, 2025

George Aaron Sikes was born in a log cabin at his family home in Choctaw County, AL near the community of Barrytown in 1936. He moved with his family to Mobile, AL in 1951 and remained a resident of the Mobile/Saraland area for 74 years until he passed peacefully, in his sleep, at his home at 88 years old on Thursday January 30, 2025. He was called home by his Beloved Savior while in the caring presence of his wife of 45 years, Mary K. Sikes, and many cherished family members.

Mr. Sikes graduated from Vigor High School in 1955 and shortly after was commissioned to active duty with the National Guard in Augusta, GA during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. After returning to AL he began his career at L&N Railroad (later becoming CSX Railroad) where he remained a faithful employee for 42 years until his retirement. Ever the workman, Mr. Sikes also perfected his craftsmanship as a skilled carpenter while building several of his own homes and assisting many family and friends as they constructed their family residences. Never one to remain idle, Mr. Sikes was active daily as he worked in his garden, performed household repairs, and obsessed diligently to maintain an impeccable yard where limbs, leaves, and debris were an over matched and doomed nemesis.

Mr. Sikes lived his youth playing baseball, later transitioning to softball, and remained an avid sports fan throughout his entire life. His most prized possession, outside of family, was an Alabama baseball cap passed down to him by his father. He loved to watch all sports, play golf, hunt, and spend as much time fishing on the river as he possibly could.

Mr. Sikes was an extremely devoted Christian who placed the Lord first in his life above all else. Music was an enormous part of his being with a particularly strong love for "old fashion" southern gospel hymns, singing with his family, playing his guitars, and enjoying the fellowship brought forth by music and worship. As the quintessential family man, he loved being around family members as much as possible. From regular sibling gatherings, to holidays, to visits from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he loved spending time with those that he loved and he knew loved him.

Mr. Sikes is preceded in death by his parents George W. Sikes and Vernell Sikes, his sister Lenell Jordan, his daughter Francis Virginia Sikes, his step-son Kyle Bradfield, and his step-grandson Hoby Bradfield Jr.

George Aaron Sikes leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years: Mary Katherine Sikes. His siblings: Earnest (Mary) Sikes, Nelson (Tannis) Sikes, and Earlene (Del) Matson. His children: Randy (Susie) Sikes, Jeffrey (Cheree) Sikes, Robert (Lisa) Sikes, Jeremy (Crystal) Sikes, and Hoby (Rusty) Bradfield. As well as 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and numerous loved nieces and nephews.
