Gladys Venell Jeter Slaughter, 89, of Stapleton, AL, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the age of 89. She was born May 15, 1930 In Uriah, Monroe County, AL to the late Allen Dewey Jeter and Geneva Shipp Jeter. She went to work for Baby Bell Telephone Company (Bell South) in 1946 and relocated to Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA before she retired after 41 years of service and moved to Stapleton, AL to be closer to her family. Gladys was preceded in death in 2012 by her husband of over 60 years, Theodore Cleo “Joe” Slaughter; and two sisters, Doris Hayles and Reba Jeter. Her survivors include her two canine companions, Buddy and Jesse, whom she loved dearly; her daughter, Diane Wilson; grandsons, Greg Wilson and Robby (Bridgette) Wilson; great-granddaughter, Allie Wilson; nephews, Jerry (Shelby) Hayles, Bill (Cindy) Slaughter and Bobby (Lisa) Slaughter; nieces, Jean (Doyle) Sikes and Janice Ely; her “adopted children in love”, Beea and Rick Burks who loved and cared for her many years; special friend, Sam Powe; extended family and friends. Gladys was a “gypsy” at heart who loved to travel the country with her husband, Joe and Joe’s late sister, Lucille, and her husband, Ray French. They traveled by motor home and would send family members post cards from all over the country. She told her family many times that she wished she could travel again. She was loved by her family and friends and will be truly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 10:00 AM from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM.
