Beloved father, devoted husband, and cherished friend Glenn Madison Butler died in Mobile, Alabama on November 20, 2020 at age 79.
Glenn was born in Natchez, Mississippi on July 27, 1941 to George Madison Butler and Annie Williams Butler. He graduated with honors from Vigor High School in 1959, and went on to attend the University of Alabama. He was among the first historic cohorts to receive Master’s degrees from the University of South Alabama in 1972.
Glenn served in the U.S. Air Force in Athens, Greece from 1963 until the Regime of Colonels coup d’etat in 1967. Upon his return to the United States, Glenn began his career in the Office of Disability Determination with the state of Alabama. Glenn was revered by the close-knit team he supervised, and received numerous awards, including Employee of the Year, during his tenure with Disability Determination.
Glenn travelled widely in the United States and Europe, and relished study of his three favorite things: great books, dry martinis, and the blues. His charm, wit, kindness, and willingness to help anyone in need were well known to innumerable individuals and organizations in Mobile, where he touched many lives.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Wayne Butler, in addition to his husband and partner of 46 years, Robert Sol Davis.
Glenn is survived by his son, David Glenn Butler, and daughter, Elisabeth Harmon Butler, as well as a sister, Elizabeth Butler Williamson (Ralph) of Mobile. Additional survivors include niece Susan Butler Kennedy (Bill), nephew Laurence Butler (Page), two grand-nieces, Anna and Niamh Kennedy, and long-time family friend Greg Miles.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
