Grace Battiste, a long-time resident of Eight Mile, died Monday,, at Providence Hospital. She was surrounded by her family, and Pastors. Grace was born in Jackson, Miss. She was a Blessing to everyone she met for 85 years. She was a cashier for Winn Dixie for 20 years and owned and operated Waite's Square Dance Shop for 14 years. Grace was preceded in Death by her first husband, Carlton Scott Waite Sr, father Ollie Fairchild, mother Grace White, brother Ollie Fairchild, Jr, Sisters: Carol Herrington, Francis Wiggins, Norma Eppenett, and granddaughter Angie Schwartz. Grace is survived by her husband, Gary T Battiste, children: Carlton Scott Waite , Jr.(Linda), Andrew Paul Waite(Mona), Virginia Whigham (Dale), Harold Battiste, Jackie Hobbs (Allen), Clint Battiste, and Kevin Battiste. Grandchildren: Jeff Waite (Michelle), Michelle Adams (Chris), Ashley Waite, Amanda Hancock ( Terry), Tony Whigham (Lisa), Brandon Whigham ( Sarah), Alexandria Miller, Deryk Smith ( Brittney), Caleb Battiste, Chelsea Battiste, Sydney Sasser, Taylor Battiste, Corbin Battiste, and Avery Battiste. 22 Great Grandchildren, 9 Great Great Grand Grandchildren, 1 sister, Shelia Fairchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Grace loved her family, and she taught many how to love. Grace also loved her church, quilting, and camping. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The Fathers House, 4709 Lott Road, Eight Mile, Alabama 36613. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 2pm at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will start at 12 noon. Burial in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
