Horace Edmund Higdon, Jr.
Horace "Ed" passed away on Monday, September 27, 2016, at his home surrounded by close family members. He was born in Evergreen, Al, on July 31st, 1938, and is preceded in death by his parents, Horace Edmund Higdon, Sr., and Leetta Clyde Duck, as well as aunts and uncles.
Ed is survived by brothers and sisters: Mary, Leon, and Kalita, his wife Helen Torres, children: Bretta, Jamie, John, Jeannelynn (TJ) and Michael, and grandchildren: Rena, Shelby, Brea, Chantel, Sabrina, Alex, Marcus, Helena, JT, Anthony, and Vincent.
Ed graduated from Murphy High School in 1957, and joined the Army shortly thereafter. He was an MP stationed in White Sands, New Mexico.. After serving in the Army, he enlisted in the Air force Reserve and went to aviation training in Florida. Later he became a captain with the Civil Air Patrol.
Eventually, he settled in Winslow, AZ where he owned and operated the Gambles store. As a man of many trades, he went into truck driving for a few years after the Gambles store franchise closed down. He later received his bachelor's degree in business. Ed liked building homes; a trade skill he learned earlier from his father but didn't apply until later years. He built and renovated many houses in AL, AZ, CA and Guam.
Ed also loved traveling and flying. He would volunteer to search for missing people out in the Arizona desert. He enjoyed taking trips as a reason to fly his plane. He flew his family and friends to places like Alabama, California, Florida, Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Most of all he loved his family and friends; always willing to help others in need. He spent a lot of his time helping his Navajo friends. He really enjoyed cooking for his family; in particular Mexican food was his favorite as he was praised for his enchiladas.
Throughout his life he treasured his family, dedicating and providing for them and in return his family treasures him for his kindness and thoughtfulness.
