Irving "Son"George Pope, born May 28, 1922, a native of Vineland, AL and longtime resident of Mobile, AL, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the age of 94. He was a faithful longtime member of Woodmont Baptist Church, and a current member of Government Street Baptist Church. Irving was a decorated World War II veteran and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He had a greater than 40-year career with the Alabama Highway Department, retiring as an Assistant Division Engineer in Mobile, AL. During his retirement, he maintained his passion for vegetable gardening. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clyde Flowers Pope; his father, Thomas David Pope; his mother, Idell McManus Pope; his sister, Grace Hill and his brother, Roy Pope. His survivors include his three children, Ellis (Annette) Pope, Linda (Jim) Ivy and David (Dana) Pope; six grandchildren, Laurie (Sean) Dickens, Brian (Ashley) Pope, Michael (Brittany) Pope, Michelle (Grady) Walton, Nathan Ivy and Meagan Ivy; three great-grandchildren, Emily Dowdle, Riley Grace Pope and Carson Pope; his sister-in-law, Jenette Pope; other relatives and friends. He was greatly loved by his family and friends, and will be sadly missed. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 12:00 Noon from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 10:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
