James Carter

Rev. James Roy Carter, born May 23, 1928 in Huntsville, AL to James Marvin Carter and Lucy Maude McGee Carter, passed away after a brief illness on July 10, 2015, surrounded by his family. After graduating from Huntsville High School, he served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. While in service he received his call to the Ministry. He graduated from Howard College, now known as Samford University, and went on to graduate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity. He served as Pastor at the Gullett's Bluff Baptist Church in Camden, AL, and at the First Baptist Church of Uriah, AL. He retired after 25 years as Chaplain at Searcy Hospital in Mt. Vernon, AL. After retirement, he enjoyed the opportunities that he had to preach at the Mission of Hope.
Rev. Carter, affectionately known as Brother Roy, was a member of Orchard Baptist Church for nearly 49 years, where he served in numerous positions including Chairman of the Deacons and Sunday School teacher. He also enjoyed singing in the choir and reading his Bible, which he read from cover to cover 62 times. Bro. Roy was a humble man who never met a stranger, and he always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He loved the Lord with all his heart, soul, mind and spirit, and he led hundreds of people to the Lord. Bro. Roy is survived by Delores Carter, his faithful wife of over 57 years. He is also survived by his children, Paul Carter (Missy), David Carter (Diane), Maria Thompson (Chris), and Gayle Carter, his grandchildren, Jami and Jeffrey Carter and Bradley and Brooke Gorum, and a great grandchild, Cohen Gorum. He is also survived by his sister, June Carter Caskey (Carroll), and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 13th from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Services will follow at noon in the chapel. Interment will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Orchard Baptist Church, 6960 Overlook Road, Mobile, AL 36618.
