James Neal Greer, Sr., a native of Uniontown, AL and longtime resident of Mobile, AL died Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the age of 83. Mr. Greer served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He worked for CSX Railroad as a Switchman, served as a legislative representative to the United Transportation Union for 20 years and served as local chairman for 4 years. Mr. Greer was a member of Azalea Lodge 898 AF&AM where he served as Past Master, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and Abba Temple Shrine. He was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church and served in the Meal Delivery Ministry for many years. Mr. Greer was a self-taught craftsman in woodworking and built a houseboat in the 1960's on which he spent much of his time with his family. He also built fishing boats, furniture and turned beautiful works of art on his lathe. After retiring from the railroad, he bought a motorhome and traveled all over the United States. Mr. Greer was preceded in death by his parents, Neal and Eva Greer. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Julia "Judy" Goodman Greer; his son, James Neal Greer, Jr., and his wife, Mary; his daughter, Julie Hatcher, and her husband, Ray; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; other relatives and many loving friends. A visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Friday, May 8, 2015 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM followed by funeral services at 6:00 PM from the Chapel of the funeral home. Masonic graveside services will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 3:30 PM in Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Mr. Greer, Sr.'s honor be made to Cottage Hill Baptist Church Missions or a local charity of your choice.
