James Daniel Spann, a native of Opp, AL and longtime resident of Mobile, AL, died Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the age of 79. He was a "diesel mechanic extraordinaire" for over 50 years and retired from Wards International. He was a Past Master of Mobile Masonic Lodge 40; Dual member of George U. Potter Lodge 912; member of ABBA Temple Shriners; a member of The Baptist Chapel and a Korean US Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Franklin Spann and Lavonia Eileen Thornton Spann; his wife, Carolyn Marie Roberts Spann; a daughter, Edith Jane "Edie" Spann Broadus; two infant brothers; one sister, Helen Spann Thorn, and an uncle, Hubert Spann. His survivors include a daughter, Tammy Sue Spann Robinson; a son, James Edward "Eddie" (Rosalind) Spann; one brother, William Franklin (Margaret) Spann; six sisters, Elizabeth Spann Dursema, Peggy Spann (Thomas) Wiggins, Opal Spann Pitts, Wanda Spann (Austin) Clark, Debra Spann (Joe) Anderson, and Mildred "Bo" Spann (Will) Littlefield; two grandsons, Nicholas James Robinson and Daniel Joseph Broadus; other relatives and friends. Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Steve Merritt, will be held Monday, August 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 12:00 Noon until service time. Interment, with Masonic Graveside Honors, will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Kindred Hospice, especially Candice, Christina, Lydia and Chaplain Roger for their outstanding care and family support.
