On Monday, June 3, 2024, James Leo Willmann passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Jim was born on August 30, 1950, in Mobile, Alabama to Leo Joseph Willmann and Bernice (Simmons) Willmann. Jim graduated from the University of South Alabama, earning Master of Arts and Master of Education degrees. Mr. Willmann was beloved by many students during his 37 years working in the Mobile County Public School System, teaching at Blount High School and Baker High School. His years in education went beyond the classroom as a sponsor for the Chess and Key Clubs. He chaperoned students in yearly trips to Washington D.C. with the Close Up program. In 1992 Mr. Willmann was chosen by a student to attend the Presidential Scholar's Ceremony in Washington D.C. Eventually seeking additional challenges in education, Jim took his talents in the classroom to the college level teaching history at Faulkner State, Bishop State and the University of South Alabama. Outside of the classroom he enjoyed spending time in the woods hunting and fishing the waters of the Mobile Delta. He always loved spending time with family and friends, imparting wisdom and telling jokes. He was affectionately known as Uncle Jim and "Bampaw".
Jim is preceded in death by his loving wife and soulmate, Sherrye Leigh Willmann. He is survived by his son Robert Willmann and wife Tammaney Willmann, granddaughter Lilly Willmann and grandson Kai Willmann; his daughter Cherokee Carlson and husband Keith Carlson; brother Mike Willmann and sister Carla Taylor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Mr. Willmann on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church at 12 Noon. The family will receive friends from 11am until service time Monday at the church. Graveside services to follow in Dawes Cemetery.
