Jean Smith Burgess passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at the age of 89, at Crowne Healthcare Facility. Her family surrounded her. Jean was born in Canoe, Alabama to Sam and Allie Smith on May 17, 1929. She and her parents later moved to Brewton, Alabama, where she graduated from W. S. Neal High School as the valedictorian of her class. She married her high school sweetheart, James Burgess, in 1948. In 1956, Jean and James moved to Chickasaw, Alabama. A few years later they moved to Beau Terra subdivision in Mobile, Alabama where they lived most of their lives. As they aged, they moved close to their daughter, Kim, in Semmes, Alabama. Jean and James had three daughters, Becky, Ginger and Kim. Jean was an exceptional mother and was devoted to her family. Her faith was one of her top priorities. She was a member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church where she taught children's Sunday school and attended women's bible studies. Jean was employed at Mobile College as a dorm mother. She loved her "college kids" and they adored her. Jean loved the outdoors especially her flower garden. Among many hobbies, she loved playing bridge, reading and sewing. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Allie Smith, her loving husband, James O. Burgess, her eldest daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Jean Burgess, her 3 sweet sisters, Hilda Milner, Eleanor Milner, and JoAnn McGill. Survivors include her daughters, Ginger Ready (Larry), Kim Leousis (Mark), 5 grandchildren, Kristi Hall (Ray), Will Ready (Anna), Chelle Davis (Greg), Nikki Leousis, and Collin Leousis, and 8 great grandchildren, William Hall, Thomas Hall, Virginia Hall, Russell, Jones, Michael Jones, Peyton Jones, and Ella Grace Ferguson and multiple nieces and nephews. Her pallbearers will be Mark Leousis, Collin Leousis, Will Ready, Ray Hall, William Hall, Thomas Hall, Russell Jones, and Michael Jones.Her family and friends will miss her loving smile and generous caring nature. The family wishes to thank her caregivers at Crowne Healthcare on Navco Road. Funeral services will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home (6040 Three Notch Road), Visitation beginning at 9:00 am and the Memorial Service will follow at 10:00 am in the Chapel; The Rev. Kathy L. Jorgensen will officiate.
