Jean Cecelia Schluter Montiel was born on November 2, 1922 and departed this life on
December 19, 2017 to reunite with her husband of 65 years, Ruben Ricardo Montiel Jr., and to
join her Lord and Savior, to whom she was always faithful. She leaves behind her cherished
children, Mr. Ruben Ricardo Montiel III (Vickie) of Mobile and Dr. David Charles Montiel (Glenda)
of Montgomery; her beloved grandchildren, Barbara Jean Neal (Rocky), Sandy McLauchlin,
Ruben Ricardo Montiel IV (Christy), Bobby Hannah, Melissa Suzanne Montiel (Jake Nelson),
Jordan Montiel McBride (Rick), Jean Kathryn Montiel Parnell, Charlotte Montiel Davis (Sean),
Judith Ann Montiel Stubblefield (Jason); her precious great-grandchildren, Brittany and Philip
Neal, Amelia McLauchlin, Rick, Elle, and Reid McBride, Bennett, Blake, and Kate Parnell, Bella
and Elijah Davis, Marilyn, Vivian, Eleanor, and Priscilla Stubblefield, and Lucy and Laurel
Hannah; along with her dear sister and brother, Mary Schluter Palmer (the late Buddy) of
Mobile and Jack Lawrence Schluter (the late Gladys) of New Orleans and their families. Jean is
preceded in death by her parents, Vivian and Janie Schluter, both natives of Mobile.
Jean was born in Mobile and lived all of her life there. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School
and graduated from the Visitation Academy, where she served as a cheerleader, excelled
academically, and graduated with honors. Rather than attend college, Jean contributed to the
war effort as a secretary for the Army Corp of Engineers in World War II. During that time, Jean
received notice that her husband Ruben was missing in action. Jean's faith remained strong,
and she was vigilant in prayer and hope, a devotion she upheld throughout her life. After many
months, Ruben was returned safely home, and now Jean and Ruben rejoice together once
more.
Jean was an avid reader, an excellent golfer, and a soft-hearted animal lover who adored her
many pet dogs. She and her late husband Ruben were charter members of Skyline Country
Club, where she spent many days on and off the golf course, playing cards, and socializing,
and where she twice served as President of the Ladies Golf League. Some of her great joys
were spending time with those she loved, traveling, and learning. She was tremendously proud
of her two sons and the lives they built, and she never missed an opportunity to see her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean will be missed by all who knew her, for she had a
vibrancy and intellect seldom matched. She exuded a love for life and people that spread to
those around her. She was spunky, smart, energetic, and loyal. She spent her life in honor and
love as a devoted Christian, wife, and mother, the epitome of a good and faithful servant.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 22, 2017 at Mobile Memorial Gardens, located
at 6040 Three Notch Road. Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 with a graveside service to
follow. Pallbearers are Michael Palmer, Harry Palmer, Robert C. Freeman, Ruben Montiel IV,
Bobby Hannah, Rick McBride Jr., Sean Davis, and Jason Stubblefield. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor or Visitation Monastery.
