Jerry Austin York, age 94, passed away on August 20, 2021 in Mobile, AL. He was born to Clifford Curtis York and Anyce McVay York on April 27, 1927. Mr. York served his country honorably in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, after which he played baseball at Spring Hill College, where he ultimately earned an undergraduate degree. He also played professional baseball in the Washington Senators organization. After leaving professional baseball, Jerry went to work for Chrysler Corporation in Jacksonville, FL before returning to Mobile to become general manager of Barnes Motor Company. Jerry and his father later owned and managed York Chrysler Plymouth. He ended his working career as a marketing manager for AmSouth Bank. Jerry was one of the founders of youth baseball in Mobile, helping to build several area baseball fields and serving as an officer and corporate sponsor of several youth leagues.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Van Houten York; parents, Clifford and Anyce York; sisters, Dora Alice Outlaw and Rebecca O'Brien.
Left to cherish his memory are his children; Clifford (Margaret) York, Jay ("Kitty") York and Mary Austin York (Bo) Hudson; 12 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Mary York Nursing Scholarship Fund at Spring Hill College,
4000 Dauphin St., Mobile, AL 36608. Arrangements by Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Three Notch Road. The service will be private.
