Obituary

On Monday, May 24, 2021, Joann Freeman Cruitt, loving daughter, wife, mom, and grandma, passed away at the age of 85 at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, AL surrounded by her loving and caring daughter and son-in-law.

Joann was born on January 26, 1936 in Atmore, AL. After growing up in Atmore, she married Billy George Cruitt, her High School sweetheart and love of her life, in 1955. They moved to Mobile where they lived and raised their daughter. They moved to Daphne, AL 2000.

Joann loved family, people, traveling with her husband and daughter, entertaining, and all of life. She was a very loving and outgoing person and had a sassy personality and look about her. She was her daughter’s best friend/bud, shopping companion, and advisor. Her daughter already misses her many calls.

“Grandma” was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother who ADORED her family. She made the sweetest sweet-tea and the best birthday cakes. She loved listening to Eli Gold call Alabama football games on the radio, and watching the New Orleans Saints with her grandson.

“Sis” to her sister Patsie. They had wonderful times getting to know each other the last few years as true friends; laughing together; spending special, funny, and good times together; enjoying Christmas; baking cakes and cookies; making candy; and just enjoying doing things together.

Joann worked for a few years at the Mobile General Hospital in the morgue and Brookley AFB, in Mobile.

Her goal was to be the best homemaker, wife, and mother.

Joann believed in helping others and devoted much of her time to activities benefiting seniors and the less fortunate. Joann was a member of the Eastern Shore Baptist Church.

Joann was preceded in death by her loving husband Billy George Cruitt, who died on March 11, 2021, her father, Hillary Iris Freeman, her mother, Margie Lee Baker and her brother CH Freeman. She is survived by her only child Cindy Cruitt Kaiser (Herb), her grandson Kevin Cruitt Brown (Meghan), great-granddaughter Molly Brown, sister Patsie Kingsbury (Jerry), many nieces and nephews, and many close cousins, relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital where she contributed to for many years.

Special thanks to the staff at Thomas Hospital of Fairhope, Daphne Police and Fire staff, Medstar, and her personal caregiver, Val Simms. We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
