John Bernardo

John Joseph Bernardo, born in Brooklyn, NY on January 1, 1942, passed from this life on July 4, 2020. He spent most of his childhood in Haverstraw, NY, then studied at the State University of New York Maritime College, graduating in 1963 with a degree in nautical science, and a U. S. Merchant Marine Deck Officer License. During that year he met and married Judith Uttard of Bethlehem, PA. They were married for 46 years before her passing in 2010. Together they raised three children. John sailed as a deck officer for the Istmian Steamship Company. In 1964 he joined the U. S. Coast Guard on active duty, and later in the U.S.C.G. Active Reserves, having achieved rank of Lt. Commander. After his military service, he went to work for Chevron and held various management positions, his last being Eastern Regional Superintendent of Ports. During his career he co-authored plans for marine transportation and safety for both foreign and domestic applications. John was well-known in the maritime community. He was recognized by the U.S.C.G. 8th District Admiralty and by C.O.P.T. Mobile for his enhancements to Maritime Safety. He is survived by his children, Joseph (Keri) Bernardo, and Tracy (Samuel Fuqua) Bernardo; his grandchildren, Brittnee Allen, Anthony Bernardo and Dallas Bailey; his son-in-law, Jeffery Greenberg; other relatives and friends. His daughter, Lee Ann Greenberg, died earlier this year. Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 22, 2020 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Graveside committal will follow Wednesday at 1:30 PM in Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, AL. If attending please comply with social distancing guidelines. Facial masks are required.
