John Chance

August 25, 1952 — April 12, 2025

John Edward Chance, a devoted husband, beloved father, proud pawpaw, and cherished friend, passed away in Mobile, Alabama, at the age of 72 after a strenuous battle with cancer.

Born on August 25, 1952, in San Francisco, California, John was the son of Mary Dorothy Mortarano and Lonnie Loyl Chance. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James, and his grandson Chandler Adams.

John is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Lee Chance; his daughter, Angie Adams, and son-in-law, Kevin Adams; his son, John Chance Jr., and daughter-in-law, Donna Chance;

his cherished grandchildren, Emily Adams, Jalynn Chance, Connor Adams, Madison Adams, Morgan Adams, Mary Beth Chance, and Anna Marie Chance;

his sister, Barbara Vega, and her husband, Percy;

his sister-in-law, Tammie Brown, and her husband, Scott;

his brother-in-law, Bert Cather, and his wife, Tonya;

and his beloved mother-in-law, Mona Lee.

His love for his family was boundless, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, John honorably served his country for over 20 years, including during Operation Desert Storm. After returning home, he continued to serve his community by working at Scott Paper Company and International Paper Company until his retirement.

John was an avid fan of the University of Alabama, passionately cheering on their football, basketball, and baseball teams. His Crimson Tide spirit lives on through his grandchildren, including Jalynn and Connor, who chose to attend the university inspired by his love for it.

He found joy in every moment spent supporting his family. Whether it was a baseball game, dance competition, pageant, or school assembly, John was always in the crowd, beaming with pride.

At home, John found comfort in the simple things-he loved mowing the lawn and took great pride in keeping his yard immaculate. A natural fixer, he was always tinkering with tools, repairing anything from household appliances to cars. There was rarely a broken item John couldn't figure out, and his handiwork lives on in the things he mended with care.

Funeral arrangements will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Date, time, and burial location are to be determined. The service will be officiated by Pastor Justin Welford.

John was the heart of his family-steadfast, selfless, and full of warmth. His absence leaves an unfillable space, and his memory will live on in the lives he touched so deeply.
