John Donald Higby, Sr., a native of Bay Minette, AL and longtime resident of Mobile, AL, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at the age of 89. John was employed by The Gulf Mobile and Ohio Railroad, later Illinois Central Gulf, for 37 years. His survivors include his wife of 69 years, Carolyn Prentice Higby; two children, John Donald (Kay) Higby, Jr. and Marlene Higby (Mike) Rathle; his grandchildren, John Donald Higby, III, Leigh Higby, Alexandra (Ben) Stroecker, Grainger Rathle and Michael Rathle; two great-grandchildren, Lachlan and Addy Stroecker; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 12:00 Noon until service time. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
