John Lansing

March 17, 1933 — November 11, 2018

John Tolbert "Mud" Lansing, age 85, a long-time resident of Grand Bay, AL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 11, 2018. John was born in Magnolia, MS on March 17, 1933 to the late George Edward Lansing Jr. and Mary Sugg Lansing. After attending Mississippi State University, John served in the United States Navy in Corpus Christi, Texas as a flight mechanic. John moved from Texas to be a part of the "start up crew" at the Pascagoula Standard Oil Refinery in 1962.
He retired from the Chevron Pascagoula Refinery after many years of service in Operations and Plant Protection. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and keeping busy with his many hobbies. John enjoyed traveling all over the country with his wife Marlene, children, and grandchildren. The most notable travel destination for John was a summer RV trip to Alaska with Marlene. John enjoyed eating raw oysters, bowling and the outdoors. He was an expert domino player, canoer, and fisherman. John was also a professional storyteller at many Lansing Family Reunions over the years. John was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide and South Alabama Jaguars fan-attending many ball games and sporting events over the years with his wife Marlene.
John was a prominent, active member of the community throughout his life. An Eagle Scout, John faithfully served the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster for many years and volunteered for the Alabama Forestry Awareness program. Over the years, John served the town of Grand Bay, AL in many different capacities-including the Fire Department, Water Works Board, and Civitan Club. John was always willing to help family, friend, neighbor or stranger.
John is preceded in death by his brothers George Lansing, Fred Lansing, and Bill Lansing, and his sister Lynn Lansing Gardner. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Driskell Lansing, and sisters Mary Margaret "Meg" Lansing Boogaerts and Janella "Jane" Lansing Derrick.
He is also survived by his son John David (Sandra) Lansing, daughter Ann Lansing (Greg) King, step-sons Neil Sims, Steve (Susan) Sims, and step-daughter Sheri (Jeff) Westbrook; grandsons Ryan (Christina) King, Garrett Lee King, and John Derek (Ashley) Lansing; step-grandsons Brian (Monica) Sims, Nick (Stephanie) Sims, Jeremy Sims and Matthew Westbrook; step-granddaughters Paige (Nate) Young, Shelli (Kyle) Young, Payton (Stanley) Lacey and Katie (Matthew) Makofske and several great-grandchildren .
Serving as Pallbearers will be Jeff Westbrook, Ryan King, Garrett King, Derek Lansing, Brian Sims, Nick Sims, Jeremy Sims and Matthew Westbrook.
The family will receive visitors to celebrate the life of John Tolbert Lansing on Wednesday, November 14 from 5-7pm and Thursday, November 15 from 11am-12pm. A funeral will follow on Thursday, November 15 at 12pm, followed by a short graveside service. Visitation and funeral services will all be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
