John Powell, Sr.

April 29, 1937 — November 18, 2024

John W. Powell Sr., a devoted husband and father, dedicated veteran, and a man of unwavering faith passed away peacefully on Monday, November 18th at the age of 87. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 29,1937 in Mobile, AL, John proudly served his country in the United States Airforce during the Korean War. A true patriot, he carried the discipline and dedication of his military service into every aspect of his life. After his service, John pursued a career as a skilled pressman, earning accolades for his work with the Corps of Engineers. His meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to excellence were a reflection of his strong character.

John's greatest joy, however, was his family. He met the love of his life, Frances, and they were inseparable. They were true partners in life with God at the center during their marriage of sixty years. Together, they created a home filled with love and laughter, raising their two sons, John and Richard, who were close in age.

Their home became the neighborhood hangout where everyone felt welcome, and they were considered the second parents (and later second grandparents) to many of their kids and grandkids friends. The Perkins boys and Teaford girls were regulars and John and Frances happily believed in the idea of the more; the merrier.

John and Frances shared a passion for family camping trips and traveling and created countless cherished memories with their children and grandchildren. John was a licensed pilot but also enjoyed his favorite hobby of building and flying model airplanes with John and Richard. They were well-known customers in local hobby stores.

He also shared a close bond with his brother, William "Bill" Powell. They were quite the duo growing up and known for their shenanigans amongst their family and friends. Their connection extended to Bill's family, including Elizabeth Powell (preceded in death), Russell Powell (preceded in death, and Judy and Janet Powell, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

A man of deep and abiding faith, John could often be found witnessing to people and sharing his love for God. He believed in the power of healing and took every opportunity to offer words of encouragement and hope to those he met.

John is survived by his son, William (Richard) Powell (wife-Mary), Debra Powell (Daughter in law), and his grandchildren, Jennifer Powell, John Powell, III (wife Emily), Meagan Powell Kizer (husband Keith), and his great-grandchildren, Reagan, Owen, Evie, Hudson and Gracie and other family and friends.

He is reunited in eternal peace with his wife, Frances Powell, son John Powell Jr, grandson Bradley Powell as well as his parents William Powell and Flora Zirnstein.

John leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. He is deeply missed and will be forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
