GROVENSTEIN
Johnnie Austin Grovenstein, Sr., 93, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016.
Johnnie was born and raised in Rincon, Georgia and was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He fought and served during World War II and was honorably discharged as a Private.
A retired salesman and business owner he was a longtime resident of Mobile, most recently residing at University Oaks of Mobile. Johnnie was a faithful parishioner of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, Johnnie Austin Grovenstein, Jr., his beautiful daughter in law, Melissa Grovenstein; his parents, Barnard Hiller Grovenstein and Maude Rahn Grovenstein; four brothers, Luther, Carl, Harmon, and BH; and two sisters, Mearl Dasher and Essie Cannon.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Pearl Cobia Grovenstein; two sons: Gerald Grovenstein , Larry Grovenstein (Ann); four grandchildren: Dane Grovenstein (Johanna), Evan Grovenstein (Jessica), Brian Grovenstein (Becky), Tiffany Grovenstein; one great-grand child (Hope) and many nieces and nephews; one sister Helen Gnann; one brother Irvin (Betty) Grovenstein.
The family will receive friends at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 6100 Cottage Hill Road. Officiated by Rev. Joy Blaylock, a church funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers are Dane Grovenstein, Evan Grovenstein, Brian Grovenstein, Howard Gnann, Eddie Cobia, and George Cobia.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 6100 Cottage Hill Road, Mobile, Alabama, 36693.
