John “Sonny” Blake was born in Mobile on August 2, 1935. He attended Murphy High School & Spring Hill College. He served in the Naval Construction Battalion and spent 2 years in Guam. He was employed by Scott Paper Company for 34 years, then ran his own construction business after retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman his entire life and was a fanatic of football, baseball, horse racing, and NASCAR. Sonny never met a stranger and could talk to anybody about anything. He was extremely generous and would not hesitate to give the shirt off his back. He was a faithful member of the Community of Christ family.
He leaves behind his wife LaVonne, daughter Denise & husband Ray Dailey, son Bob & wife Kelly, daughter Kara & husband Michael Cropp, 5 grandchildren: Bethany & husband Errol Tisdale, Blake Dailey, Benjamin, Samuel, & Emma Grace Blake, and 2 great-grandchildren: William & Finn Tisdale. Honorary pallbearers: Brent Stokes, Mike Counselman, Mark Joseph, and Chuck King.
The funeral service will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Road, on Friday, September 6th, with George Farnell, Les Rogers and Sheila Steiner officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, service at 2:00 PM, with burial immediately following.
In lieu of floral arrangements, the family asks that you make a donation to the National Ataxia Foundation in John Blake’s memory.
