MELE

Joseph Charles Mele, PhD, a native of Hammond, LA and longtime resident of Mobile, AL, died Friday, January 12, 2018 at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony T. Mele and Cecelia Deliberto Mele; his wife, Dolly, and his two sons, Marc and Eric Mele. His survivors include his loving grandson, Anthony Joseph Mele, other relatives and friends. Professor Mele was a graduate of Louisiana State University. His doctorate encompassed areas in the communication arts. He was hired as a chairman to inaugurate the areas of speech, speech pathology, audiology and drama at the University of South Alabama. These disciplines later became independent departments. After 27 years of teaching at the University of South Alabama, he retired in Mobile. He had previously held positions at Louisiana State University, the University of Alabama and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Dr. Mele took great pride in helping to begin the University of South Alabama. The family will receive friends at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Wednesday, January 17, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Graveside services and interment will follow at 2:00 PM in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
