Laverne S. Day, a native of Dearborn, MI and longtime resident of Mobile, AL, died Saturday, September 30, 2017 at the age of 87. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Tillman's Corner; was known for baking and decorating cakes; enjoyed quilting, gardening and spending quality time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Aloysius Schimpf and Verna Ois Joiner Schimpf; her husband, Jackson Wilbur Day; her sister, Helen Bendickson and her grandson, Danny Johnson. Her survivors include her daughter, Judy (Don) Johnson, her son, Jackson C. (Verda) Day both of Mobile, AL, her daughter, Dorothy D. (David) Murray of Athens, AL; five grandchildren, Karen Godwin, Tabitha (Shane) Philen, Jeff (Erin) Day, Meredith (David) Grisham and James Johnston, Jr.; thirteen great-grandchildren, Heather (Trey) Massey, Penny Godwin, Jarrett Day, Sarah Godwin, Alexis Day, Brittney Grisham, Annalise Philen, Micah Philen, Kaitlyn Grisham, Evan Philen, Vella Day, Zane Grisham and Josie Philen; one great-great-grandchild, Elijah Douglas; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 10:00 AM from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening, October 3, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and Wednesday morning from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Tillmans Corner Building Fund. Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.
