On January 1, 2021, Leila "Marion" Barnette, a beautiful kind soul, passed peacefully away in Gulf Breeze, FL at the age of 90. She was a living example of love and strong Christian faith, and a blessing to all who knew her. Marion was born on May 15, 1930 in Greenville, AL to Clarence M. and Essie M. Barnette. She graduated from high school in Montgomery, AL, and began a lifelong successful career with AT&T in Mobile, AL at the age of 18. She held management positions in Birmingham, AL, Atlanta, GA and Morristown, NJ, and was active in several civic organizations.
Throughout her life Marion loved books, music, art, and travel, but most of all she cherished her family. Her life enriched the lives of her family and many friends who will always remember the kindness, love, and generosity of her Christian spirit. Marion was a faithful member of the Azalea City Church of Christ in Mobile and enjoyed sharing her deep faith with others. She was a gifted speaker and writer; she taught ladies' bible study classes for many years. She was a true example of how to live life as a Christian. Time spent with family and church friends was precious to her.
Marion was a beloved daughter, sister, niece, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence M. Barnette, her mother, Essie M. Barnette, her older sister, Alma Swann, her younger brother, Clarence "Buddy" Barnette, her niece, Carol Barnette, and nephew, Shawn Barnette. She is survived by her niece, Carol Headley (Steve), niece, Donna Johnson, niece, Linda Swann (Henry), nephew, David Swann, several great-nieces and nephews, and special friend Bonnie Barnette. Although she has passed from this life, her loving spirit and caring heart will be remembered by everyone who knew her.
We extend our special thanks to Bay Breeze Nursing Home, Gulf Breeze Hospital, Azalea City Church of Christ, and Covenant Care Hospice for their compassionate and professional care for our aunt. Graveside services and interment will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 12 noon in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday 11am till service time.
