Heaven gained an angel, Lucille Edith Gillaspie McCawley, on May 23, 2014 at the age of 93. Mrs. McCawley was born to Ruth Ethel Shutt and William Daniel Gillaspie on July 19, 1920 in Bon Secour, AL. Henry H. McCawley, Sr. asked Lucille to dance with him at a social in 1936 and she happily accepted. It was love at first sight. They were married for 67 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. She had a gentle spirit, beautiful smile and opened her home to people of all walks of life. Sunday afternoons were spent with family and friends gathered around Lucilles dinner table socializing and enjoying southern cooking. She was a skilled seamstress who made clothes, Eastern Star and Azalea Trail dresses. She held the office of Adah in the Eastern Star for approximately 20 years. She was a resident of Mobile for over 70 years. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Henry H. McCawley, Sr. infant son, Henry Eugene McCawley parents, William and Ruth Ethel Shutt Gillaspie granddaughter, Alyssa McCawley Rhea her brothers, John Gillaspie, Herman Gillaspie and Floyd Gillaspie her sisters, Florence Helton, Elsie Kirksey and Audrey Murphy. She is survived by her son, Henry H. Martha McCawley, Jr. daughters, Shirley Ed Chavers and Dionia Jim Veasey grandchildren, Eric Christie Veasey, Mark Veasey, Dr. Scott Paige Chavers and Sheryl Chavers Jesse Verdin greatgrandchildren, Alex Veasey, Amber Veasey, Colby Verdin, Blake Verdin, Garrett Rhea, Michael Rhea, Lance Chavers, Isabella Chavers and Molly Chavers nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Carolyn Monterio and staff at Stacey Manor for their love and care these past eight years and to Tracy Levines, Gentiva Health Care Hospice nurse. Funeral services will be held from the Chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations, in memory of Alyssa McCawley Rhea, be made to Assistance In Healthcare, 2520 Elisha Avenue, Zion, IL 60099 for the Cancer Treatment Center of America.
