Mary Brown

June 7, 1931 — October 1, 2016

June7, 1931- October 1, 2016
Mary Helen Travis Brown passed away while at home Saturday October 1, 2016 surrounded by family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and beloved by many friends. Her genuine candid "thoughts and opinions" will be missed by all of those that knew and loved her. Mary influenced many young men, working as a group home parent at the United Methodist Children's Home in Mobile, AL. Mary's position might have only called for her to be a group home parent for the boys placed in the Children's Home, but any young man she had loved and cared for will quickly let you know that she loved them as they were her own. She was simple, and had one passion in life her family! Born June 7, 1931 in Covington, TN to Harry and Opal Travis. Eventually she would settle in Palestine, Texas, where she lived until moving to Mobile in 1970. Her strong love of the Texas hill country, Texas Blue Bonnets, and as she would say Texas was "God's Country", it is easy to see why she would always consider Texas home. She is preceded in death by her parents Harry and Opal Travis, husband, Edgar Marion Brown. The eldest child of four, Mary is survived by each sibling: Barbara Cruse (David), Gloria Wesson (Buddy), Butch Travis (Donna); and her children: Mike Brown (Linda) and Beverly Guest (Wayne); Grandchildren: Christy Stewart (Felicia), Travis Guest (Katie), Matt Brown (Stephanie), Leigh Deakle (Brett), and Meg Grosz(Colby), and 8 great-grandchildren. As well as a tremendous number of friends she loved dearly. Mary lived a life of devout faith to her savior Christ our Lord, she was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was strong-willed, quick-witted, and she seemed to have the uncanny ability to bring laughter and adventure to each day. She loved generously, was poised and always impeccably dressed. Mary Travis Brown was the epitome of a family matriarch, and will be greatly missed by all family and friends. Visitation will be held from Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Monday, October 3, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held from the Chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 12:00 PM. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
