Mary DeVitt Horton (1920-2017 )
Mary DeVitt Horton "Mom", aged 96, went to be with her Lord on Monday, May 15, 2017 surrounded by her family. "Mom" was born on Monday, September 17, 1920 in Mobile, AL to the late David Floyd Devitt, Sr. and Carrie Wilkins Devitt. "Mom" attended Mobile Public schools for 9 years and then graduated from high school in San Diego, CA in 1938. On her return to Mobile, she met and married the love of her life, Charles P Horton. She was best known for her love of her family whom she cherished to her last moments. She was also known for her love of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Some of "Mom" and "Pop's" favorite memories were attending football games in Tuscaloosa and the times they spent on campus. She was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church from 1954 when she accepted Jesus until 2017. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, "Pop", on June 16. 1993. Her survivors include her son, Terry (Anna) Horton; two grandchildren, Jan Horton and Tyler (Ashley) Horton; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Emma and Reese Horton; a sister, Doris Churchwell; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Her years of faithful service were spent as a teacher. She taught 5-year-old Sunday school for more than 40 years. She also taught Pre-School at Cottage Hill Baptist Church School for more than 20 years. The visitation will be at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 1 PM until 2 PM. A graveside service will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens at 2 PM. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be sent to Cottage Hill Baptist Church - Meals Delivery.
