SCRUGGS
Mary Louise Frederickson Scruggs was born Dec 23, 1943 to Faye Peters and Ivan Frederickson. Mary came from a family of farmers. She moved with her family to Theodore, AL when her father came to work at the Scott Paper Mill. She helped her parents build their own home from the ground up. She attended and graduated from Theodore High School in 1961. Later she married her boyfriend from high school, Bennie Harrison and they moved to Shalimar, FL. There they had a son, Terrill "Terry". After 3 years there Bennie passed suddenly and Mary moved back to live with her parents and got a job at J. C. Penny. After a few years she met and married Peter Scruggs. They had a daughter, Deborah. Mary left her job and stayed at home to care for her children. Many years later, when Pete had to retire due to medical reasons, Mary went back to work. She took a job with Sears Teleparts call center assisting people in ordering replacement parts for anything Sears sold. She cared for Pete and worked as much as she could until she reached retirement age. She then devoted herself full time to caring for Pete. They were long standing members of First Baptist Tillman's Corner Church where she served in the Children's department for many years. She loved her church and her friends there. She and Pete loved watching sports especially Atlanta Braves baseball. She watched every game she could and cheered and yelled at them as needed. When Pete became sick and passed away then Mary became even more devoted to her granddaughter, Lauren. Mary often would pick Lauren up from school and watch her activities from dance to softball. Mary also enjoyed traveling to see her daughter near Atlanta where they would attend Braves' ball games. She saw the team play in 3 different stadiums. Mary tried to stay active and was walking 3 miles each morning at Mobile Memorial Gardens until she had an upper respiratory issue that seemed to take her endurance. She was eventually diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis from an unknown cause. She became oxygen dependent but still attended her church and any activities she could.
Mary recently contracted the flu which progressed to pneumonia and she passed away on February 3rd, 2018 at Providence Hospital.
She is survived by her son Terry (Leslie) Harrison of Mobile, AL; daughter Deborah Scruggs of Newnan, GA; granddaughter Lauren Harrison; nieces Jennifer (Tim) Cole of Pensacola, FL; Jacquie (Henry) Brandt of North Hampton, NH; brother-in-law Harry Scruggs of Pensacola, FL and many friends.
