Merrill Joseph McRae, 88, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, and a long-time resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2022, at a local hospice. He was the son of Archie William McRae and Lena Britt McRae and moved with his family to Mobile at the age of five. He graduated from S. S. Murphy High School in 1952, served in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in 1959. After working as a social worker and a teacher, he spent his career at the United States Postal Service, and in retirement, worked for Enterprise Car Rental. He was also a lifelong member of Dauphin Way Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pam Jones McRae, his son Joseph McRae, his daughter Stephanie Smith (Mike), and his two grandsons, Kenneth Smith, III, and Chase Smith.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses, staff, and volunteers of The Retreat Hospice by Saad and the home hospice program of Saad Healthcare for the service and comfort they provided in his final days.
Visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. A graveside service, conducted by Rev. Gary Middleton, will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, 34904 Alabama Highway 225, Spanish Fort, Alabama.
